Time to Over-React: Sobering Recalibration of Memphis v. Lakers Series

Yeah, the Grizz dropped the first game of the series against the Lakers. Get over it.

Yes, Ja might miss an extended period of time.

Sure, we’re still missing Steven Adams and Brandon Clarke.

Who cares?

First of all, do we need to be reminded of the Grizzlies’ record when they were without Morant? In 2021-22, the Grizzlies went 20-5 without Morant; in 2022-23, they went 10-8. We’re not saying we should be hoping for a Grizzlies team without Morant, but it doesn’t mean Henny Penny is yelling that the sky is falling, either.

Also, don’t forget that it’s difficult—if not damn near impossible—to beat the Grizzlies at home (36-5 home record during the regular season. The Lakers grabbed the first one, but it’ll be hard for them to do it consistently.

We should also remember that the Lakers are old and this series is definitely going 6, if not 7, games. They’re going to get tired; they’re going to fade. We’ve seen this from Lebron all season. And while the Lakers have the veteran experience that is so clutch for a playoff run, we have the youth and the depth off the bench.

We don’t see much need for an over-reaction—leave that to chuckleheads like Stephen A. Smith and Skip Bayless. Their bread and butter is provocation cheese.

We’re gonna keep it reasonable: we’re sticking with our 4-2 prediction for the series. Take that for data, cos they ain’t gonna rook us!
